Temporary Residential Intensive Prevention Program

An advocate for parents; TRIPP is a "weekend wake-up call" for disruptive youth.

Empowering Youth and Families

Youth live at a center where they are under continuous adult staff supervision. Length of stay is generally three days: Friday through Sunday.

Activities include classroom instruction, assigned chores and community service projects. Youth live in a highly restrictive and disciplined atmosphere that teaches self-discipline, respect for authority and compliance with the rules. The program also teaches responsibility and accountability and includes mandatory Family Team Building sessions for guardians.

12—17 years of age        · Non-delinquent     · Out-of-control     · Disrespectful

Purpose

This program is designed to empower youth with the realization that they are in control of their own decisions and therefore, must take responsibility for those actions. Youth respond well to the structured environment where they are given skills to make choices and every choice they are given is one of consequence, whether it be good or bad. Youth also learn that parents and guardians and other adults in positions of authority are in charge.

 Objectives

To teach youth these skills:

· Make better and smarter choices.                        · Control Anger         · Negotiate for what they want with approval of parents.

· Benefit from being respectful to authority figures.        · Realize the benefit of community involvement.

Family Team Building

For this program to be successful the guardians/parents must also be involved. Attendance at two three-hour sessions presented at intake and exit is mandatory for guardians. The purpose of these sessions is to bridge the gap of communication between the youth and parents. Through group discussion and homework, parents learn how to increase family communication, increase the family’s ability to identify underlying issues and solve problems and increase their positive concept of the family unit.

Key Benefits

  • 70-75% of youth return home and parents report they make significant positive changes.
